Major League Baseball announced Friday Jose Altuve was voted by fans to start at second base for the American League in the 2022 All-Star Game. Being named to his eighth Mid-Summer Classic, Altuve ranks third all-time at his position in selections.

The Houston Astros' lone starter trails only Ryne Sandberg (10), Bobby Doerr (9) and Red Shoendienst (9) for the most All-Star selections at his position. Setting a franchise record with his eighth selection and fifth start, Altuve passed Hall of Famer Craig Biggio (7) for the most invites in Astros history.

Altuve enters Friday leading all American League second basemen in homers (17), on-base percentage (.368), slugging percentage (.539) and OPS (.907). The 32-year-old beat out Toronto Blue Jays' Santiago Espinal with 57 percent of the vote.

Designated hitter Yordan Álvarez finished second behind Shohei Ohtani by and will likely be selected as a reserve for the American League.
