Houston Astros Sign Veteran Catcher to Bolster Depth Options
The Houston Astros have made a shrewd move down the stretch as they have signed a veteran catcher to a minor league deal.
On Monday, the Astros signed Andrew Knapp and will report to Triple-A Sugar Land.
Knapp has played at the MLB level in six different seasons, five with the Philadelphia Phillies as their backup catcher.
During his time with the Phillies, Knapp slashed .214/.314/.322 and played solid defense behind the plate. However, since his time in Philadelphia he has bounced between the San Francisco Giants, Pittsburgh Pirates and the Seattle Mariners.
The backstop was recently released from the Detroit Tigers last week where he spent 70 games with their Toledo affiliate. He slashed .253/.337/.397 in that span.
At 31 years old, Knapp has plenty of experience that can help a team down the stretch if needed. Competent backstops are a premium and if the current situation for the Astros deteriorates, then Knapp is a great play in the back pocket.
