Houston Astros Veteran Close to Returning Ahead of Important Mariners Series
The Houston Astros have completely fallen apart down the final stretch of the season. They are now two-and-a-half games back in the AL West division standings and are holding the final Wild Card spot.
Now, they head into a road series against the Seattle Mariners who they have a 2-8 record against so far this season.
The Astros need to figure things out and figure things out fast if they want to defend their 2022 World Series title.
They could be close to getting their veteran slugger Michael Brantley back for this important series as he's returning from injury.
According to MLB.com, Brantley has been dealing with shoulder soreness stemming from his August 2022 shoulder surgery. This soreness kept him out of six straight games after he returned to the team Aug. 29.
Prior to Sunday's game, the outfielder did batting practice and was running on the field as he tries to make his return.
MLB.com writes, "There's a chance Brantley could return to the field for the series against the Mariners beginning Monday."
Since making his return, the 36-year-old is hitting .262/.273/.429 with two home runs and six RBI in 12 games.
Brantley has been an important left handed bat in their lineup throughout his five year career with Houston. He's been a staple in left field when healthy as well.
What his role will be when he returns is to be seen.
Manager Dusty Baker said the Astros will continue keeping their slugger Yordan Alvarez in the designated hitter position, so if Brantley can't throw the ball effectively from the outfield, it's likely he's only used as a pinch hitter.
If that ultimately is his role, it's still a plus for Houston to have his veteran presence and bat in their lineup as they face their division rivals with a playoff spot on the line.
