May 17: New York Yankees starter Domingo Germán has been suspended by MLB for using a foreign substance to enhance his grip on Tuesday while on the mound against the Toronto Blue Jays.

He will serve a 10-game suspension and pay a fine. He will not appeal.

Germán was ejected just before the start of the fourth inning of the game on Tuesday. This is the second time Germán has been called out for using a sticky substance this season. The first time he was made to wash his hands but was able to return to the mound.

This time there was no warning, was ejected and will now serve a suspension.

This comes on the heels of a series of cheating accusations involving Aaron Judge, sign stealing and other accusations being thrown between the Yankees and Blue Jays.

One thing is clear: Germán did in fact cheat.

May 15: According to USA Today, Los Angeles Angels superstar Shohei Ohtani will not be traded ahead of the 2023 MLB trade deadline.

USA Today's Bob Nightengale writes this of the 2022 American League MVP:

Please, enough is enough. The Angels are NOT trading Shohei Ohtani. The only chance to get him is when he hits free agency in November.

Plenty of speculation has surrounded Ohtani and the Angels this season. If the Angels were out of the postseason race by July, then why not pursue a trade of the greatest baseball player on planet Earth? It would produce one of the biggest hauls this game has ever seen.

Apparently Los Angeles is not going to entertain the idea, or so Nightengale thinks. It's still worth keeping an eye on as the end of July approaches.

May 9: The Texas Rangers will be without starting pitcher Jacob deGrom for longer than the minimum stay on the 15-day injured list after suffering inflammation of his pitching elbow reports the Dallas Morning News

deGrom has been throwing catch but no timetable has been given for his return which indicated he will not be back when eligible to come off of the injured list.

It's not unexpected as the Rangers have taken a very cautious approach to injuries this season with all of their players.

Dane Dunning has assumed deGrom's spot in the rotation for the time being.

Texas is currently 21-13 after defeating the Seattle Mariners on Monday night.

May 3: Los Angeles Angels closer Jose Quijada will undergo Tommy John surgery according to manager Phil Nevin. Quijada had ligament damage in his elbow, which was reported on Tuesday.

He sought out a second opinion and now will undergo Tommy John surgery. He will miss the entirety of the 2023 MLB season and likely the majority of 2024.

Quijada has been with Los Angeles since 2020 when he was claimed off of waivers by the Miami Marlins. Since then Quijada has proven he can handle high-leverage situations.

The Angels will have to look elsewhere for a dominant left-hander to help in late inning situations moving forward.

Los Angeles has been dealing with a rash of injuries to their pitchers as right-hander Austin Warren is also dealing with elbow issues. But he appears likely to avoid surgery and could be back in a month.
