One member of the Houston Astros 2,000-hit club took a moment to congratulate Jose Altuve for joining him after he collected his 2,000th hit on Saturday night.

Craig Biggio — who leads all Astros hitters with 3,060 hits — talked with the media shortly after Altuve got his 2,000th hit in the fifth inning.

MLB.com tweeted the video.

“That was pretty cool, pretty special — wish he had been safe,” Biggio said, referring to the fact that Altuve was thrown out at second base while trying to stretch the single into a double. “What an incredible accomplishment. It’s 2,000 hits, it’s only been done three times now in Astros history. I’m really happy for him, the path he’s on and the journey that he’s had.”

The only other Astros player with 2,000 or more hits is Biggio’s teammate, Jeff Bagwell, who finished his career with 2,314 hits.

Both are in the Baseball Hall of Fame.

“You have to stay healthy, you’ve got to play,” Biggio said. “You start out in the National League and you gotta go out there and play every day. Then you go to the American League and you can DH a little bit. But he goes out there and plays every day, takes his 600 at-bats and he’s an amazing player. What does he have? Two or three batting titles? The awards that he has are pretty incredible. He’s a better person than he is a player. I can’t say how happy I am for him.”

Altuve broke in with the Astros in 2011 as a 21-year-old when the Astros were still part of the National League. Since then, he’s led the Astros to two World Series titles in 2017 and 2022.

He is an eight-time All-Star, a six-time Silver Slugger, a three-time batting champion and the 2017 American League MVP.
