Where Are Houston Astros in Updated Pipeline Rankings?
The Houston Astros used to have one of the best pipelines of prospects in the MLB. It's how they have been able to build into one of the best teams in the league over the past decade.
With their prospects hitting the big leagues, they have not been able to replenish the well of talent in recent years.
MLB.com put out their updated rankings of every team's pipeline.
They have the Astros dead last.
In fact, they haven't had them ranked over 27th in the league since they evaluated all 30 teams back in 2020.
Nobody in the organization should be bothered by this considering they're in a "win now" period focused on maximizing their chances to win championships now instead of building for the future.
The reason why they're so low in the rankings is because they don't have a single player in the Top 100 prospects list and have shipped out their top pieces over the years.
Three writers for MLB.com put together this rankings list.
"They traded their two best prospects (outfielders Drew Gilbert and Ryan Clifford) in the Justin Verlander homecoming in July, yet the strength of their system remains outfielders (Jacob Melton, Luis Baez and Co.) and underrated arms (starting with Spencer Arrighetti)."
The prospects that have stayed in the organization have made an impact when hitting the major leagues for the Astros.
"(They) produced three players who received Rookie of the Year votes (Cristian Javier, Luis Garcia, Jeremy Peña) and three more who may this year (Hunter Brown, Yainer Diaz, J.P. France)."
Despite coming last in the rankings list, Houston should not be concerned. They clearly know what they're doing with the prospects they keep and the ones they send out to get immediate help for their inevitable playoff runs.
