Should Houston Astros Pursue Utilityman Profar in Free Agency?
There has been plenty of chatter surrounding the Houston Astros potentially adding another capable bench piece ahead of the 2023 MLB season. Some names that have been thrown out there as a potential fit are Yuli Gurriel, Tyler Naquin, and Jurickson Profar who has been mentioned since December.
Profar is an interesting idea and fit for the Astros. He is entering his age-30 season, a former #1 prospect in all of baseball, and can play any position on the baseball field aside from catcher.
The 29-year-old played an integral part in the San Diego Padres' successes last season being an everyday player slashing .243/.331/.391 while playing left field.
Coincidentally, Astros manager Dusty Baker made it a point that he wanted Yordan Álvarez to play left field about 70-percent of the time in 2023. That leaves open some playing time in left, but Profar can also offer plenty of DH time to other regulars due to his versatility.
Most importantly, Profar offers consistency as a platoon player, something Houston hasn't really experienced since Marwin Gonzalez. It would solidify one of the only "weak" spots on the roster and further the case for the Astros as World Series favorites.
As the offseason drags on and Profar remains without a home, the idea of bringing him into the fold only gets better by the day.
