A's Reliever Trevor May Tells John Fisher to Sell the Team: "Take Mommy and Daddy's Money Somewhere Else"
MLB reliever Trevor May took to Twitch on Monday to announce his retirement from the game after nine seasons in The Show. May was drafted by the Philadelphia Phillies and traded to the Minnesota Twins, where he made his debut. He hit free agency after the 2020 season and signed on with the New York Mets for two seasons. He played the 2023 season with the Oakland A's after signing on in the offseason.
The 34-year-old also spent time on the IL this past season with issues related to anxiety, but was phenomenal upon his return, including holding a 1.50 ERA in the second half.
After making his retirement announcement, May turned to the camera and said, "Now that's it's official, to the A's organization and every single person that is a part of it, I love all of you. Every single one of you, except for..." he paused for dramatic effect before continuing, "one guy. And we all know who that guy is."
"Sell the team, dude. I tried to get a "SELL" shirt, it didn't get here fast enough. Let someone who actually takes pride in the things they own, own something. There's actually people who give a [hoot] about the game. Let them do it. Take mommy and daddy's money somewhere else. Also, if you're going to be a greedy [person], own it. There's nothing weaker than being afraid of cameras. That's one thing I struggled with this year, is not just eviscerating that guy."
You can see the entire stream here, with his comments coming right around the 59 minute mark.
May was also responsible for closing out the both Reverse Boycott game, and the Unite the Bay game, two of the biggest crowds at the Coliseum this season. He got to feel that atmosphere, and after each game said that it felt like pitching in the playoffs in New York.
It's not the atmosphere, or the fans that are the problem. It's the owner.
