A's sign Stephen Piscotty to minor-league deal
Stephen Piscotty is coming home. According to the team's transactions log, the Oakland A's have signed the 33-year-old outfielder to a minor-league deal. The Pleasanton native last played in the big leagues in 2022 with the A's, but since the team released him back in 2022, he has bounced around to the Cincinnati Reds, San Francisco Giants, and Chicago White Sox.
The A's first acquired Piscotty from the St. Louis Cardinals in December of 2017, and he had a monster 2018 season, mashing a career-high 27 homers, driving in 88, and knocking 41 two-baggers in 151 games.
He played in just 93 games the following year and has maxed out at 72 games since due to injuries. In 51 games with the White Sox Triple-A affiliate, Piscotty hit .232 with a .330 OBP and six home runs.
The A's have a number of outfielders in the mix ahead of Piscotty, a list that includes Esteury Ruiz, JJ Bleday, Lawrence Butler, Seth Brown, Miguel Andújar, Brent Rooker, and potentially Denzel Clarke and Max Schuemann, depending on where we are in the season. It won't be easy for the veteran outfielder to crack the roster in Oakland.
That said, it would be a truly magical moment if he is able to play at least one more game at the Coliseum. With the team's planned departure for Las Vegas, this could end up being the club's final year in Oakland. County and city officials are meeting with the A's about a possible lease extension on Thursday, but we don't know how that will shake out just yet.
While we await those details, having Paul Blackburn start a game, Lucas Erceg close it out, and Stephen Piscotty collecting a hit in the same contest seems like something that all Bay Area baseball fans can be cheering for in 2024.
