A's Unveil 2024 Schedule, Which Includes Potentially the Final Game at the Oakland Coliseum
Major League Baseball announced the schedules for all 30 teams on Thursday afternoon, and for A's fans there was one date that everyone looked to first. No, not who the green and gold would be playing on their birthday. The game on everyone's mind was the last home game of the season, which could turn into the last home game of the Oakland era for the A's.
That date is now set at Thursday, September 26th against the Texas Rangers.
There is a lot that still needs to happen before the A's are officially gone. Oakland Mayor Sheng Thao met with MLB Commissioner Rob Manfred on Sunday to provide some of the details of the work that the city of Oakland has put into making a ballpark happen at Howard Terminal in the hope that the record will be set straight and perhaps even change some minds among the owners, who still have to vote to approve the A's relocation.
The A's will start off the 2024 campaign by hosting the Cleveland Guardians for four games, then the Boston Red Sox for three. The only AL West opponent they'll face in the first month is the Texas Rangers, on the road. They also have a planned doubleheader scheduled for May 8th at home, also against the Rangers.
The National League teams that will be visiting Oakland next year are the Washington Nationals (April 12-14), St. Louis Cardinals (April 15-17), Pittsburgh Pirates (April 29-May 1), Miami Marlins (May 3-5), Colorado Rockies (May 21-23), Los Angeles Dodgers (August 2-4), San Francisco Giants (August 17, 18), and the Milwaukee Brewers (August 23-25).
Outside of the final home date of the season, the Giants' series in the middle of August has some serious potential to be quite memorable if the A's are indeed on the way out of town. The two fan bases have been rivals for decades, and yet they're coming together to "Unite the Bay" on July 25th at Oracle Park to stage another protest and make some noise. There will even be black "sell" shirts available for Giants fans to wear.
With the arrivals of top prospects Tyler Soderstrom and Zack Gelof on Friday night, the A's have a chance to be a more competitive team as 2024 rolls around as the youth movement is apparently underway for the A's.
