Daily Show Host Desus Nice Talks About Oakland's "SELL" Movement
In a segment called "Long Story Short" from Thursday's episode of The Daily Show, host Desus Nice talked about how taxpayers are typically handed the bill for new stadiums and ballparks around the country. He mentioned Yankee Stadium, near where he lives, going from "The House That Ruth Built" to "The House That You and I Built."
Nice also plays a clip from an interview with former president of the Miami Marlins David Samson, when he basically admitted that even though the team had threatened relocation, that they were never seriously going to look anywhere else. That's part of the game that teams use to get the funding that they're looking for.
It's also the game that Oakland didn't want to play after providing nearly a billion dollars in on-site and off-site infrastructure funding, which is how we've seen Las Vegas become the new destination for the team.
The segment also uses a quote from an economist that said, "the contribution of a baseball team is similar to that of a mid-sized department store." Not exactly the economic boost that the people of Nevada have been promised.
The first six or so minutes of the clip set the backdrop for what has been happening in communities across the country. The final minute and 45 seconds is dedicated to the Oakland fan's "SELL" movement, pulling clips from local media and MSNBC of the "Reverse Boycott" game back on June 13.
Desus got a chuckle when they played a news clip of a fan in a "SELL" shirt saying, "30,000 people are going to show up tonight to tell John Fisher that he sucks." The host then said, "That's how you do it. Listen, I'm an East Coast boy, but Oakland paying $20 to cuss out a man you've never met is big New York energy. Respect!"
