Jenny Cavnar to join Dallas Braden in A's booth
According to a press release sent out by the Oakland A's yesterday, NBC Sports California has named Jenny Cavnar the primary play-by-play announcer for in-game coverage. Not only is she a 20-year veteran in the business with 17 years in baseball, but she will also become the first woman to be the primary play-by-play voice of a team in Major League Baseball history.
Cavnar has spent the past 12 seasons working with the Colorado Rockies as their backup play-by-play announcer and reporter for regional television coverage.
“Jenny is a very talented announcer with significant experience covering baseball,” said Matt Murphy, President & General Manager of NBC Sports California and NBC Sports Bay Area. “She’s been a groundbreaking professional who’s earned the admiration of fans and her peers throughout her career. We’re very excited for her to join our excellent team and lead our A’s coverage starting this season.”
Back in 2018 she had an opportunity to be on the Rockies' television broadcast as the PxP announcer, and her home run call on this Nolan Arenado big fly seems like it will go very well with Dallas Braden's "next stop, pound town."
"Fire up the fountains, she's gone!" is a great call, but as she admitted later in the highlight, it only works at Coors Field.
“It is a dream come true to join the broadcast team for the Oakland A’s and their rich baseball history,” said Cavnar. “Growing up the daughter of a baseball coach, I have loved the game from a young age, along with the stories, history, and relationships the game provides. I’m excited to start my 18th season as a major league broadcaster with my good friend Dallas Braden and share our experiences with the loyal fans of the Athletics as we go on this ride together.”
The A's had an opening in the booth after Glen Kuiper's firing last summer, and made it through the rest of the 2023 season with radio guys Johnny Doskow and Vince Cotroneo. With the addition of Cavnar, it would appear as though Doskow will go back to his role on the radio side, in the role he was originally hired for.
