Oakland Ballers Sign Their First Outfielder
The Oakland Ballers (a.k.a. B's) have announced their third player signing in outfielder Trevor Halsema. The San Diego native played in 92 games for the Idaho Falls Chukars of the Pioneer League in his first year in pro ball, batting .310 with a .400 OBP, six homers, four triples, ten stolen bases, and 61 rbi.
Halsema spent four years at USC from 2018 to 2022 and played sparingly up until his senior year when he got into 44 games with the Trojans and hit .238 with a .308 OBP.
In his first year in the Pioneer League, Halsema held a 12.8% walk rate and a 17.5% strikeout rate with an .858 OPS. He led the Chukars in hits (107), walks (52), runs (81), and plate appearances (405) last season. He also ranked ninth in the entire league in doubles (25).
Idaho Falls was the worst team in the PL last season, going 34-61, so hopefully this opportunity with a brand new team in the Ballers provides him a fresh start.
Assistant GM Tyler Petersen said of Halsema, "We’re really excited to welcome Trevor to the Ballers for 2024. He performed at a very high level throughout his season in Idaho Falls and he’s been a player that was on my radar for a while. So I am glad that we can bring him back to his home state and on our squad for our first year.”
On top of the addition of Trevor Halsema to the B's roster, the team also announced that the time and date of the League's open tryouts. The first one will be in Davenport, Florida from February 9-11, followed by one in Scottsdale, Arizona from April 16-18 at Salt River Fields, where the Diamondbacks and Rockies play their Spring Training games.
At the end of the tryout, 12 players will be drafted and offered a contract to attend a PL team's Spring Training. More information can be found here.
There is now Ballers gear available in both green and black available at Oaklandish.
