On Monday, the Oakland A's officially placed Seth Brown on the IL. On Tuesday, manager Mark Kotsay offered an update on the timeframe that Brown would be out.

"Our doctor examined him back in Oakland. It's a Grade 2 strain of the left oblique. Generally the timeline runs four to six weeks."

With that timeline estimate, Brown could be set to return at some point in May. Whether that would be at the beginning of May or the end of the month depends on how quickly he recovers.

The A's left fielder had played every game for the A's up until he was kept out of Sunday's lineup for the finale in Tampa Bay. Brown felt some discomfort after a check swing during Saturday's game.

The 30-year-old is batting .200 with a .250 OBP through eight games. He also has one home run, which he hit off Guardians' reliever Emmanuel Clase in the bottom of the ninth last Monday.

With Brown out for an extended period, left-hander Conner Capel will likely see the majority of the playing time in left field, playing against right-handers. He'll be sharing those duties with righty Brent Rooker, who will take on the southpaws.

While Rooker's .111 batting average has fans feeling a bit disappointed in his early production (he's 1-for-9), he has been hitting the ball hard consistently. Of all the players with at least one batted ball, Rooker ranks fifth in all of baseball with an average exit velocity of 99.6. League average is 88.4.

With right-hander and Orioles top prospect (#5 in MLB) Grayson Rodriguez on the mound for his second MLB start, Rooker is in the lineup playing right field in an effort to give Ramón Laureano a little break after playing the whole series in Tampa Bay on the turf.

"We had a series in Tampa on the turf where he played all three. Yesterday him and I talked about an opportunity to get off his feet. Turf can do certain things to the muscles that you're just not used to. So rather than push through, felt today would be a good for him [to rest]."
