Braves decline to make 40-man roster moves ahead of Rule 5 protection deadline

Atlanta had four prospects newly-needing protection entering the day, and they've added none of them to the 40-man roster

The Atlanta Braves declined to make any 40-man roster moves prior to today's Rule 5 protection deadline, leaving four new prospects (and thirty total prospects) unprotected for next month's Rule 5 draft.

We discussed this a few weeks ago - Atlanta has four newly-eligible prospects to potentially be protected from selection in the Rule 5 draft, including our #23 & #24-ranked prospects, OF Jesse Franklin V and LHP Luis de Avila.

Since selecting a player in the Major League portion of the Rule 5 draft requires not only an open 40-man roster spot, but carrying that player on your 26-man active MLB roster all season, Atlanta usually isn't very active in selecting players during that phase. But they still have a vested interest in the selections, both to protect their own prospects and via adding players in the Minor League portion, like Allan Winans and Luis De Avila.

(To refresh: To be eligible for selection in the Rule 5 draft, a player must be either four or five years removed from entering professional baseball - four years if signing at age 19 or older, five years if signing at or below age 18 - and not currently on a 40-man roster. Any selections in the Major League phase cost the selecting team a $100,000 fee, and that player is required to be carried on the 26-man MLB roster all season or offered back to their original organization for $50,000.)

This year's Rule 5 draft is scheduled for December 6th, during the 2023 Winter Meetings in Nashville.
