Soroka looks to make his return for the Atlanta Braves Wednesday
On Wednesday, the Atlanta Braves will see Mike Soroka make his debut in the Grapefruit League, but he won't be ready to join their rotation at the beginning of the season.
Soroka, who is 25 years old and a right-hander, has not played in the majors since he tore his right Achilles in August 2020 and had to undergo three different surgeries. During spring training, he had hamstring tightness prior to reporting, which derailed his efforts to compete for the 5th starter job that's now down to prospects Dylan Dodd or Jared Shuster.
Soroka was an All-Star in 2019 during his rookie season, where he had an impressive record of 13-4 with a 2.68 ERA in 29 starts. Unfortunately, his Achilles injury happened only three starts into the pandemic-impacted 2020 season. He then tore it again the following summer, which kept him sidelined until he threw in six minor league games last year.
The Atlanta Braves will take on the Detroit Tigers Wednesday in the Grapefruit League. Soroka is expected to throw two innings in his return to action according to reports. His pitches have reach low 90s, but it is anticipated that his stamina has a long way to go before he turns to the majors.
