BREAKING: Michael Soroka removed from game after three innings

The Cardinals roughed him up, but his early departure appears injury-related.

In his latest return to the big league roster, it was not a night to remember for Michael Soroka. After an impressive first inning, Soroka left the ball up too many times and the Cardinals repeatedly made him pay, with an RBI double from Jordan Walker and two-run jacks from Tyler O'Neill and Nolan Gorman adding up to five earned runs allowed across the first three innings.

To make matters worse, Soroka was seen being examined by the training staff after the top of the third, and sure enough, he was lifted after three in favor of Collin McHugh (who hasn't done much to slow the Redbirds down).

The first thought here is a possible blister, but we've yet to see any confirmation of what the issue was. We'll update this post if any news comes through.

Pitching Matchup for the Atlanta Braves and St. Louis Cardinals on Tuesday, September 5th

Starting for the Braves today is Michael Soroka. He's 2-1 with a 5.56 ERA in his six games (five starts) for Atlanta this season. It's his third callup of the season, and outside of those two MLB stints he's 4-4 with a 3.41 ERA for AAA Gwinnett this season, having started seventeen games. 1B Paul Goldschmidt is the only Cardinals player to have MLB at-bats against Soroka, going 2-4 with an RBI in the past, but prospect Masyn Winn was 1-4 with a single against Soroka this season for AAA Memphis.

Facing off against Atlanta is Miles Mikolas. 6-10 with a 4.66 ERA in his league-leading 29 starts, Mikolas has only 112 strikeouts in 164.1 innings, walking 33. Plenty of Braves hitters have had pretty good offensive success at the plate, with Matt Olson (3-6, HR, 3 RBIs), Marcell Ozuna (3-8, 2 HRs, 2 RBIs), and Eddie Rosario (408, HR, RBI) having all taken him deep.
