The Atlanta Braves announce their City Connect jerseys
Over the past few seasons, we've seen MLB teams debut their "City Connect" alternate jerseys, to various levels of acclaim.
The Atlanta Braves are finally getting into the action, debuting their design with a social media video on Monday morning featuring Atlanta-area rapper Ludacris and Billye Aaron, widow of Braves legend Hank Aaron.
See the debut video here:
The jersey itself is based on the iconic 1974 jersey that Hank Aaron was wearing when he set the home run record, hitting his 715th to surpass Babe Ruth as the all-time homerun leader.
The City Connect program, launched in 2021, is a partnership between MLB clubs and jersey manufacturer Nike to allow organizations to go outside of their usual colors, fonts, and branding to design a homage to their home cities.
"Over the course of its first two seasons, the Nike MLB City Connect Series has been the most successful consumer product initiative we’ve ever had,” said MLB chief revenue officer Noah Garden.
“The overwhelmingly positive response from our fans is clear when you see ballparks full of these distinct designs and colors. Our Clubs have focused so much time and effort with Nike to create these exceptional uniforms for their fan bases, and it shows in every last detail. We look forward to seeing even more of our parks filled with City Connect jerseys this season.”
Six more teams added the City Connect jerseys for this season, with the Rangers, Mariners, Reds, Orioles, and Pirates all joining the Braves in adding them for this season.
This season, you'll be able to see the Braves wearing their City Connect jerseys for Saturday games in Truist Park beginning April 8th, and the official Retail Shop will have the jerseys in stock for purchase beginning April 1st.
With the addition of the City Connect jerseys, Atlanta has finalized their jersey options for the 2023 season. Under new guidelines issued by Major League Baseball after coordination from Nike, MLB teams are required to limit their jersey options to four, wth the City Connect being an additional "plus one".
In the past, Atlanta has worn up to eight jerseys - the standard home white, the road navy, the road gray, the Friday night-exclusive reds, Sunday-exclusive creams, the 50s throwback jerseys (which this, ostensibly, will replace), the Dale Murphy-era throwback baby blues, and the gold-numbered whites that went to the reigning World Series Champion and would be out of the rotation for 2023. It'll be interesting to see what Atlanta finalizes for their four options, with seemingly either the Friday-night reds or the Sunday-exclusive creams being left out of the rotation.
