Braves Briefing: What are Spencer Strider's chances to win the Cy Young?
Few pitchers have been more impressive this season than Atlanta's Spencer Strider.
His 217 strikeouts is by far the most in the MLB. Toronto's Kevin Gausman is second with 183. Strider's allowed batting average is .213, good for sixth in all of baseball.
MLB.com has him as the fourth-ranked pitcher in the NL Cy Young race. He's placed behind Arizona's Zac Gallen, San Diego's Blake Snell, and CHicago's Justin Steele.
Here's what MLB.com says about Strider.
Strider is lapping the field in terms of strikeouts, having fanned 217 batters entering play Monday -- 34 more than Gausman, the next closest pitcher. With six weeks left in the season, 300 strikeouts is certainly in play for the Braves’ young star -- as of Monday, he was on pace for exactly that number. Despite that, though, Strider has just a 3.75 ERA this year, including a 4.52 mark over his past 12 starts. While his strikeout prowess earned him a handful of first-place votes, Strider was dinged for his recent ineffectiveness in our poll.
Looking at Fanduel Sportsbook, Strider has the fourth-best odds to win the NL Cy Young.
Zac Gallen +180
Blake Snell +250
Logan Webb +300
Spencer Strider +700
Justin Steele +1000
Corbin Burnes +4000

Max Fried is still working his way back. Andrew Stefaniak led our Braves coverage Monday night.
Max Fried struggled at the beginning of this game but was able to settle in and put together a good start. The Braves lefty went six innings of eight-hit baseball, only allowing two earned runs while striking out two. Fried is still getting back into his groove after an injury, but a start like this will win a lot of games when you have this offense to back you up. He is primed to have a solid run as we near the end of the regular season.
Check out our full list of takeaways from Tuesday night.
What's next?
Game two of this three-game set will be played at 7:20 ET as Bryce Elder will get the ball for the Braves, looking to take the series against Luis Severino of the Yankees. This game can be watched on Bally Sports South and TBS.
