Braves Briefing: Another series win and Ozzie Albies makes history

Here's a quick look around the MLB from an Atlanta Braves perspective.

The Atlanta Braves have won the series against the Cincinnati Reds after winning game two 7-6 in dramatic fashion. They will look for the sweep later today.

Ozzie Albies makes history

Ozzie Albies is the first Atlanta Braves primary second baseman to hit 100 home runs as an Atlanta Brave. He accomplished the feat last night in the win over the Reds.

The timing of this comes right after concerns and criticisms from a lot of Atlanta baseball fans that wanted more out of the bottom of the lineup moving forward. Albies answered the call.

Ian Anderson is out

Ian Anderson will miss the remainder of the MLB season due to Tommy John.

Anderson was drafted by Atlanta 3rd overall in the 2016 draft out of high school and debuted in August 2020, quickly becoming an integral part of the Braves rotation. After finishing the year 3-2 with a 1.95 ERA in six starts, he was a full-season starter in 2021, going 9-5 with a 3.58 ERA and taking the ball for game three of the World Series, holding the Houston Astros to no hits and just three walks over his five innings of work in a game that Atlanta went on to win, 2-0, to take a 2-1 series lead on their way to an eventual World Series championship.

Braves Today's Will Moon covered the action last night and discussed Kyle Wright's season debut in his takeaways from the Atlanta win.

Tonight marked the season debut for Kyle Wright, who piled up 21 wins in a breakout season last year. But the righty didn't quite seem ready in this one. He got through two innings unscathed, but seemed to lose the plate at times in both frames. Things came to a head in the third, when the Reds sent ten men to the plate and plated four runs.
To be fair, Wright was plagued by some poor ball-in-play luck, with Cincinnati's three hits being a seeing-eye grounder between Austin Riley and Orlando Arcia, a Baltimore chop double over Olson's head, and a shift-busting grounder that Ozzie Albies couldn't get to in time to record the third out (two runs scored on that play). But Wright was also seemingly dealing with mechanical issues causing his sinker to sail arm-side, plus some wonky velocity/movement readings with his other pitches. Hopefully it's just rust, but it'll be interesting to see what adjustments he makes in his next start.
