Kyle Wright getting ready to possibly be the fifth starter in Atlanta's rotation
Well, there was a reason Kyle Wright was behind a little bit in Braves summer camp.
“Right before we got here, I was around someone who had it,” Wright admitted. “So, I had to get tested. I couldn’t come here until I tested negative. So, I kind of had to hit the reset button a little bit and rebuild back up.”
And he took the mound Thursday and threw three innings. It went well.
“The more I threw actually, the better I felt,” Wright said.
Right now, with questions about Cole Hamels being ready early in the season, Wright is likely the favorite to be the fifth starter. He would pitch on Tuesday, July 28 against Tampa Bay.
Back in March, Wright talked about how he had tweaked his delivery and, while not feeling completely comfortable physically with the change, it was helping him throw more strikes.
The results were there. Wright’s ERA was in the Grapefruit League was 2.03 in his four games pitched, two starts. He allowed three earned runs on seven hits in 13.1 innings, with three walks and 15 strikeouts.
Mike Soroka will get the opening day start for the Braves next Friday. He will likely be followed by Max Fried, Mike Foltynewicz and Sean Newcomb. The opportunity is there for Wright to be the fifth starter, even if Josh Tomlin is there to back him up in a piggyback role.
