BREAKING: Charlie Morton goes to injured list with right index finger inflammation
The Atlanta Braves have put veteran starter Charlie Morton on the injured list with right index finger inflammation.
The IL stint for Morton, despite being backdated to September 23rd, means that he'll be unavailable for the initial NLDS roster. He could be added as an injury replacement after he's eligible to be activated, but the player he is replacing would be unavailable for both the rest of the NLDS and the NLCS, were Atlanta to advance.
Morton initially left Friday night's game with index finger discomfort after only one inning - he reported feeling something inside his finger and got through the rest of the inning by throwing exclusively curveballs, inducing a flyout and a groundout. He did not come back out for the 2nd inning, being replaced by Michael Tonkin.
Initial x-rays on Friday night were negative, and the diagnosis was a sprain, pending an MRI. Whatever came up on the MRI on Saturday obviously caused Atlanta to feel as if Morton was not going to be available to pitch for at least the rest of the regular season and potentially the NLDS, which starts next week on Friday.
Morton was replaced on the roster by Allan Winans, who will start game one of today's doubleheader.
