BREAKING: Orlando Arcia to injured list with "microfracture" of the wrist

The Braves starting shortstop was hit by a fastball in Wednesday's night contest and will miss some time

Starting shortstop Orlando Arcia has a "microfracture" in his left wrist after being hit by a Hunter Greene fastball on Wednesday night and will go on the injured list, the team announced today.

Arcia, 28, was taken out of Wednesday's night game in the 2nd inning after being hit by Reds starter Hunter Green. Initial x-rays at the ballpark were negative, the team announced during the game, but follow-up testing on Thursday's off-day showed the injury and Arcia will be sidelined for an indefinite period of time with the injury.

Arcia was batting .333/.400/.511 for Atlanta with two homeruns and seven RBIs, while providing exceptional defense at the shortstop position. He was one of the bright spots in the bottom of the lineup, which has been scuffling at the plate. Arcia just recently signed a three-year, $7.3M extension that will keep him in Atlanta through his age 31 season.

Although it's not yet official, replacing Arcia will be Vaughn Grissom. The shortstop, who came up and played 2nd base after Arcia injured his hamstring while filling in for Ozzie Albies, was battling with Braden Shewmake for the job out of spring training. Surprisingly, Atlanta elected to option both players to Gwinnett and gave the job to Arcia.

Grissom, who is known as a better hitter than defender, spent multiple weeks in New Orleans over the offseason working with Braves infield instructor Ron Washington on his infield defense. He's had a torrid start to the AAA schedule, batting .366/.458/.585 with one home run, five extra base hits, and eight runs scored in only 10 games for Gwinnett.

Grissom was not in Gwinnett's lineup on Thursday night, a sign that he is soon to be en route to meet the team in Kansas City for Friday night's matchup against the Royals.
