Bryce vs. Bryce Duel

Bryce Elder and Bryce Miller are both having fantastic seasons and that continued on Friday night.

Miller allowed back-to-back doubles to start the game that gave the Braves an early lead, but then was shutdown after that until the seventh inning.

That's when Elder finally ran into trouble as well after tossing 6 scoreless innings. He scattered 4 singles over the first five innings and then allowed a 2-out double to J.P. Crawford in the sixth.

He got out of the sixth-inning jam but then left a sinker middle-middle to Julio Rodriguez on a 1-2 pitch to lead off the seventh and Julio hit it for a double.

Elder then walked the next batter and allowed Julio to advance to third on wild pitch.

Then he threw another sinker down the middle to Eugenio Suarez that went for an RBI single before he exited.

Elder's final line: 6 IP, 7 H, 1 BB, 2 ER, 6 Ks

Miller retired 18-of-19 hitters after those pair of doubles to start the game and then he too ran into trouble in the seventh giving up a leadoff single to Austin Riley.

He was lifted after a 1-out walk to Ozzie Albies.

Miller's final line: 6.1 IP, 4 H, 1 BB, 3 ER, 4 Ks

This Bryce vs. Bryce duel lived up to the hype.

Defense comes up clutch

The Atlanta Braves defense has been a bit suspect at times this year depending on the defensive metric you choose to use, but they came up big for the Braves on Friday.

Bryce Elder helped himself out with a nice behind the back stab.

Matt Olson made a nice glove flip to Elder who caught it bare-handed for an out early in the game.

Michael Harris II cut down a runner at home after catching a line drive to center.

Sean Murphy threw another bullet to second base to catch a would-be base stealer.

And Ronald Acuna Jr. made a leaping catch at the wall that likely saved at least 1 run.

Even Eddie Rosario made a nice running catch in the eighth inning.

Late Runs Again

The Atlanta Braves have been a team over the last several years that could score a bunch of runs late, but we haven't seen that as much this year.

Coming into Friday they were just 12th in runs scored in the seventh inning or later. But in back-to-back games now we've seen the offense come to life late for a comeback win.

Against the Rangers on Wednesday, they scored 2 in the eighth to tie the game and 1 in the ninth to take the lead.

On Friday, they score 2 in the seventh to take the lead and then added 3 more in the eighth to put the game away.

Marcell Ozuna had a clutch bloop single in the seventh to tie it. The first of his 3 RBI on the night.

Orlando Arcia continues to be clutch as he just missed a 3-run homer in the seventh but settled for an RBI single to give the Braves the lead.

Matt Olson had a leadoff homer in the eighth to give them some breathing room. One of his 2 hits on the night, and all four balls he put in play were hit 99 MPH or hard.

This was a fun game all around and it's good to see this Braves team get it going in the late innings now.

These two teams will play again on Saturday at 7:15 PM CT on FOX.
