WATCH: A pair of PillaRBIs extend the Braves' lead
The Braves jumped out tonight on a first-pitch-of-the-game homer from Ronald Acuña Jr. But Phillies starter Cristopher Sánchez settled in after that and kept Atlanta off the board over the next two frames, even as the Braves threatened for more in the first and third innings. They finally got to him again in the fourth, though.
Marcell Ozuna led off the inning with a single, and then he advanced to third on a d'ouble from Travis d'Arnaud. (Good to see Travis pulling out of his recent slump.) Philadelphia brought their infielders halfway in with Orlando Arcia at the dish, and the strategy paid off when he grounded out to his opposite number, Trea Turner. With the runners still at second and third, Kevin Pillar came to the plate. And he delivered.
Pillar got to a good hitter's count at 2-0, and Sánchez tried to fool him by throwing a slider in a fastball count. It didn't work, as Pillar snuck a line drive through the drawn-in infield. Ozuna and d'Arnaud scored as the Braves seem to have no qualms about testing the arms of the Philly outfielders, and the Braves now lead 3-0. With the way Spencer Strider's pitching (nine strikeouts through five shutout innings at this point), that may be enough, but the last few days should remind everyone that the Braves would do well to keep adding on if they can.
The TV broadcast is on Bally Sports South locally and TBS and MLB.tv outside of Braves Country. The radio call is available in the Atlanta metro area on 680 The Fan, across the Southeast on the Atlanta Braves Radio Network, and nationally on MLB.TV.
