Atlanta Braves and Alex Anthopoulos agree to contract extension through 2031 season

Atlanta's president of baseball operations is remaining with the Braves for a WHILE and it may be the biggest signing of the entire offseason

The Atlanta Braves have announced that president of baseball operations Alex Anthopoulos has signed a contract extension that will keep him with the organization through the 2031 season. Financial terms were not immediately disclosed.

“Alex and I have enjoyed a wonderful working relationship, and I look forward to that continuing for many years to come,” said Terry McGuirk, Chairman & CEO of Braves Holdings, LLC. “I have been around this game a very long time and know that Alex’s track record of success is truly something special. There is simply no one better in the business. This extension gives Alex the runway to make long-term decisions and the opportunity to continue his track record of assembling teams that are perennial contenders. I have the utmost confidence in his ability to deliver championship baseball for our fans well into the future.”

“I’d like to thank Terry for his continued support and trust,” said Anthopoulos. “The Braves are an incredible organization to be a part of, and I’m proud of the success we’ve achieved together. I am grateful for the opportunity to continue to lead baseball operations and to strive to bring another World Series to Atlanta.”

Anthopoulos, 46, has been with the organization since 2017, when he joined as General Manager and Executive Vice President. He was promoted to President of Baseball Operations in February of 2020 and signed a contract extension that was set to expire after the 2024 season.

Under Anthopoulos's tenure, the Braves have had a .593 record (515-534) with six NL East division championships (all won consecutively) and, of course, the 2021 World Series. He's been an creative and innovative front office architect, expertly using the trade market and long-term extensions to build a position player core that is the envy of baseball.

(And after giving out so many player extensions, he finally gets his own "Here to Stay" graphic!)

In six seasons under his leadership, Atlanta has compiled a 515-354 (.593) record, won six consecutive NL East division titles, and captured the 2021 World Series championship. The Braves’ 515 wins under Anthopoulos’ direction stand as the third most in baseball since 2018, as do their 24 postseason victories. He was named by Baseball America as the MLB Executive of the Year following the 2022 season and has finished as runner-up for Major League Baseball’s Executive of the Year Award in each of the last two years.

Prior to joining the Braves, Anthopoulos worked for the Los Angeles Dodgers, where he served as Vice President, Baseball Operations for two seasons. He also spent six seasons as the Toronto Blue Jays’ General Manager, which culminated in an American League East title in 2015 to snap Toronto’s 22-year postseason drought. Anthopoulos was selected as Sporting News’ MLB Executive of the Year that season. He originally joined Toronto following the 2003 season as a scouting coordinator and earned a promotion to Vice President, Baseball Operations and Assistant General Manager in 2006 before taking over as GM on October 3, 2009.
