Atlanta claims Nick Solak off waivers; McHugh to make rehab appearance

The 2016 draftee gives Atlanta more veteran depth in the corner outfield and second base

The Atlanta Braves claimed veteran utility man Nick Solak off of waivers, the team announced on Tuesday.

Solak, a 2016 2nd round pick by the New York Yankees, is on his third team of the season and fifth of his career. He was traded at the end of last season from Texas to Cincinnati, who then DFA'd him at the end of this spring and traded his rights to the Seattle Mariners. He spent four games with AAA Tacoma, going 2-17, before being DFA'd by Seattle and being claimed off waivers by the White Sox on April 14th. Due to injuries (Hanser Alberto, Yoan Moncada), Chicago needed to make a 40-man roster move and was forced to expose Solak to waivers, where he was claimed by the Braves.

Solak's spent the past four season with the Texas Rangers, where he's played multiple infield and outfield spots, including second base, left field, and third base. He had a slash line of .252/.327/.372 in 974 plate appearances in Arlington, and provided additional flexibility to Atlanta due to having an option to send him back and forth between Atlanta and AAA Gwinnett. The Braves immediately optioned him to Gwinnett, where he'll presumably slot in at 2nd base or left field until needed by the big league club.

The Braves also announced today that RHP Collin McHugh will begin a rehab stint in High-A Rome tonight, a fact that the Rome Braves were very excited about. McHugh is an alum of Berry College, located in Rome, spending three years there before being drafted by the New York Mets in the 2008 draft.
