BREAKING: Charlie Clutch is BACK!

The Atlanta Braves have called up Charlie Culberson to serve as veteran depth in Atlanta

After the optioning of Braden Shewmake to AAA Gwinnett yesterday, we speculated that Atlanta would activate Ehire Adrianza from his rehab assignment and reinstate him as the backup shortstop for this weekend's Mariners series.

We were wrong, but in the best possible way.

Fan favorite Charlie Culberson has returned to the roster and will be the main infield backup.

Culberson, 34, was previously with the Braves from 2018-2020. He had the most productive offensive years of his career, hitting .265/.314/.454 with 17 HRS in 230 combined games, but that wasn't what he was famous for. Known for his defensive utility - he appeared for Atlanta in both corner outfield spots, all four spots around the diamond, and pitched in blowouts during his three-year tenure - Culberson has one of the more famous outfield assists in modern Braves history, gunning down a Marlins baserunner from left field to preserve a one-run lead in the 9th inning of a mid-July matchup.

Culberson's last full season with the Braves was cut short due to injury, as he suffered facial fractures after being hit by a pitch in September 2019 by reliever Fernando Rodney of the Washington Nationals. He returned to the minors in 2020 and was activated for Atlanta's Wild Card Series matchup with the Reds.

After leaving Atlanta following the 2020 season, he spent two seasons with the Texas Rangers, appearing in 150 combined games with a .252/.283/.357 slash line. He signed with Atlanta late in spring training and has been playing in AAA Gwinnett.
