LHP Dylan Dodd called up to start game two of Wednesday's doubleheader

As the 27th man, he's likely to be returned to the minors immediately after the game

In the wake of last night's rainout in Detroit, the Braves are playing a doubleheader to get the entire series in prior to returning to Atlanta.

LHP Dylan Dodd has been designated the 27th man for today's doubleheader, and will start game two, the team announced on Wednesday morning.

MLB rules allow for an additional player to be designated in a temporary, 27th roster spot for doubleheaders, with the player being called up just for that day. That player is typically returned to the minors at the conclusion of both games, although technically any player on the roster can be optioned down as long as someone is moved back to the minors to return the active roster to 26 players.

Dodd, 2-1 with a 6.64 ERA, has started four games for Atlanta this season at the major league level. Considered to be bound for AAA this season entering spring training, he quickly established himself as one of two contenders for the 5th rotation spot along with Jared Shuster. In his four starts, however, he gave up five homeruns and didn't quite show overwhelming stuff, with only ten strikeouts to five walks in twenty and a third innings.

Dodd's been optioned down to the minors three times this season, and updated rules in the new CBA prohibit sending a player down more than five times in a single season without exposing them to waivers. The 27-man for doubleheaders bypasses that restriction, so Atlanta would not use one of Dodd's two remaining moves to Gwinnett for the 2023 season when he is sent back after the doubleheader. Additionally, any pitcher optioned to the minors must remain there for 15 days before he is eligible to be called back up to the major league level, but there are exceptions both to replace an injured player at the major league level and if you are the 27th man for a doubleheader, so Dodd could be recalled to Atlanta as soon as needed if he is optioned down after the doubleheader.
