Transaction: Braves call up RHPs Allan Winans, AJ Smith-Shawver

The Braves are calling up Allan Winans to start today and AJ Smith-Shawver as bullpen depth, sending Dylan Dodd and Darius Vines back to Gwinnett

The Atlanta Braves have announced some pitching moves this morning, with Allan Winans and AJ Smith-Shawver added to the active roster.

Winans, 28, will start Sunday's series finale with the Pittsburgh Pirates. 1-1 with a 5.17 ERA in his three starts for the Braves, the right-hander made his MLB debut against the Milwaukee Brewers on the road in late July. After a decent start (4.1 IP, 5H, 2 ER with 1BB and 5Ks), Winans got his next opportunity against the New York Mets, his former team. He dominated the Mets in Citi Field, going seven scoreless innings with four hits and two walks, striking out nine, but stumbled in a repeat matchup at home against that same team and was sent back down to AAA Gwinnett.

Smith-Shawver, 20, is Atlanta's #1 prospect in their system per MLB Pipeline and has absolutely rocketed through the minor leagues this season, starting the season in High-A Rome and debuting in the majors on June 4th. 1-0 with a 4.57 ERA in his five MLB appearances (four starts), he spent some time late in the season on the minor league injured list but is healthy enough to return to action, pitching 2/3rds of an inning against Memphis on September 3rd.

Those two pitchers replace Dylan Dodd and Darius Vines on the active roster. Dodd was Saturday's starter against the Pirates, going four innings with seven hits and four runs, striking out two and walking three. Vines, who was originally called up to replace an injured Michael Soroka on the active roster with the intention to start on Saturday, ended up being used on Wednesday in relief of Spencer Strider and on Saturday in relief of Dodd, pitching a combined five innings with four hits and two runs with one walk and three strikeouts.
