Cardinals Could Pursue Two-Time All-Star To Add Much-Needed Rotation Help
The St. Louis Cardinals have looked solid to begin the 2024 season but could still use a little more depth.
St. Louis has been dealt a tough hand already this season. The Cardinals have been dealing with a plethora of injuries. St. Louis is thin in the outfield with Lars Nootbaar, Dylan Carlson, and Tommy Edman all out right now.
The club also is missing top starter Sonny Gray right now as he recovers from a hamstring injury. Gray should be back shortly, but St. Louis' depth certainly has been tested so far.
St. Louis is 3-3 so far this season but has won three of its last four games. Although the Cardinals have been able to respond positively so far this season, they could still use more depth in the rotation.
One player who still is available and could make a lot of sense is two-time All-Star Julio Teherán. The veteran righty signed a minor league deal with the Baltimore Orioles this past offseason and opted out of the deal after failing to make the club's Opening Day roster. He appeared in five games in Spring Training and had a 3.38 ERA.
Teherán appeared in 14 games with the Milwaukee Brewers last season and had a 4.40 ERA in a small sample size. He is just 33 years old and has a career 3.83 ERA in 12 big league seasons.
If the Cardinals want to add more depth, Teherán may be the perfect option. St. Louis likely could land him with a minor league deal and if he could impress, possibly call him up to provide more depth. If he were to struggle, it would cause no harm at the big-league level.
St. Louis already has been dealing with an injury to Gray. More injuries certainly could pop up. Why not add a little more depth just in case?
