The St. Louis Cardinals should love what they are seeing out of Sonny Gray right now.

St. Louis' biggest weakness in 2023 was its starting rotation which led the club to look for a major splash in free agency. Signing Gray was the club's biggest response to the team's disastrous 2023 campaign.

The three-time All-Star missed the first two weeks of the season due to a hamstring injury he suffered in Spring Training. Gray missed some time, but is back now and has made two starts already for the Cardinals and has been every bit as advertised.

Gray finished second in the American League Cy Young Award voting last season and it isn't hard to see why. He hasn't allowed a run yet in 11 innings of work and already has two wins under his belt and an 11-to-0 strikeout-to-walk ratio.

He has been so impressive to begin the season that he even has made team history, according to Major League Baseball's Sarah Langs.

"Sonny Gray is the 3rd pitcher since at least 1901 with a scoreless outing of 5+ innings in each of his first 2 appearances with the Cardinals, joining 2022 Jordan Montgomery (and) 2008 Kyle Lohse," Langs said.

Gray has been great to begin the season and if he can continue to perform at this level, the Cardinals will be in good shape. St. Louis hasn't been at full strength to begin the season but has started getting reinforcements back.

The Cardinals have some high expectations this season and the performance of Gray is going to play a large role in that.
