Cardinals Star Finally Has Season Debut Date Set According To Insider
The St. Louis Cardinals will have their top pitcher back very shortly.
St. Louis made a major effort to bolster the starting rotation this past offseason and did so in a major way by signing three-time All-Star Sonny Gray. He finished in second place in the American League Cy Young Award voting last season and should significantly improve the club's rotation this season.
Gray has missed the beginning of the 2024 season as he's dealt with a hamstring injury suffered in Spring Training, but the Cardinals will have their top pitcher back on the mound Tuesday for his team debut, according to MLB.com's John Denton.
"(Right-handed pitcher) Sonny Gray will pitch for the Cardinals on Tuesday at Busch Stadium vs. the (Philadelphia Phillies), manager Oli Marmol said," Denton said. "He’ll be on a 65-pitch limit."
Gray has been making great progress but it was unclear when he would take the mound with St. Louis. He recently made it clear that he felt like he was ready and preferred his next appearance to be with the big league club rather than in the minors.
It seems like he made his point clear to the club and now will be making his next appearance with St. Louis on a pitch count. Gray is St. Louis' top pitcher and gives the club a much-needed boost. The Cardinals have been heavily impacted by injuries to begin the season with Gray being the biggest.
The club will be getting a major reinforcement back next week and there are others sure to follow soon, like outfielder Lars Nootbaar. St. Louis is loaded with talent and should be able to compete for a postseason spot this season and the return of Gray only will help with that.
