Ex-Blue Jays Slugger Could Be Option To Give Cardinals Needed Offensive Boost
The St. Louis Cardinals could use some pop in the middle of the lineup.
St. Louis currently is 6-7 on the young season but there still is plenty of reasons for hope. The Cardinals have a lot of talent on the roster and have shown flashes. The starting rotation and bullpen have kept the club in games and have given them a chance to win games.
The Cardinals' offense hasn't been as potent as many expected it to be to kick off the season, although that should turn around. St. Louis has elite offensive talent that has been underperforming and should find a way to turn things around.
While this is the case, adding some more depth couldn't hurt. One player who could fit this description well is former San Francisco Giants and Toronto Blue Jays slugger Brandon Belt.
The one-time All-Star surprisingly still is available and is looking for his next opportunity. He was solid last season with Toronto and clubbed 19 home runs and drove in 43 runs in just 103 games played. He's the type of player St. Louis could sign for cheap.
Belt is a 13-year big league veteran, former All-Star, and World Series champion who could help out offensively and provide some depth at first base or designated hitter. Plus, he could help mentor some of the younger players on the club's roster.
There doesn't seem to really be any downside to giving the 35-year-old a chance. Why not give the offense a little boost soon?
