Important Cardinals Duo Could Return This Weekend After Injury Scares
The St. Louis Cardinals seem to rack up more and more injuries each day.
St. Louis hasn't been at full strength yet this season and added a few more injuries to the tally this week. Both utility man Brendan Donovan and catcher Willson Contreras were hit by pitches on Wednesday and were forced to miss the club's home opener on Thursday.
Although both had to miss the game, they should be back in the lineup in some capacity this weekend as both got positive updates, according to the Belleville News-Democrat's Jeff Jones.
"Willson Contreras was able to swing the bat and do cage work during the game today, but he said his left hand was too sore to even put on a glove, let alone catch," Jones said. "Hope is a couple days rest will make that possible, but he may DH over the weekend...
"Brendan Donovan said postgame that he’ll be good to go Saturday. He was hit on the bicep in (Los Angeles) and just above the elbow in (San Diego) (and had gnarly bruises and seam imprints to show for it), but they were able to do enough work to get him loosened up and on a good path."
Donovan has been impressive so far this season for St. Louis and has slashed .308/.438/.500 with one home run and six RBIs in seven games. Contreras also has been impressive and has clubbed two home runs and driven in four runs so far this season.
St. Louis has dealt with a plethora of injuries this season but it's positive that both Donovan and Contreras should be back in the coming days.
