The 2023 MLB Trade Deadline will be here before we know it and there's sure to be plenty of movement.

Trade rumors have been swirling all season although there haven't been many major moves yet. The trade deadline is set to pass on August 1 and the starting pitching market has had a plethora of rumors already. From Chicago White Sox ace Lucas Giolito to Detroit Tigers lefty Eduardo Rodriguez, and maybe even Cleveland Guardians Cy Young Award winner Shane Bieber, there are expected to be some interesting names available.

The starting pitching market is expected to be extremely competitive so a team like the St. Louis Cardinal who could use another hurler may not end up nabbing one of the top options. One secondary option who reportedly could become available is former Cy Young Award winner, Zack Greinke, according to MLB Network's Jon Morosi.

"The Royals aren’t engaged presently in trade conversations involving Zack Greinke, but he’s one name to watch as we approach the August 1 deadline. Greinke, 39, is on an expiring contract and has been a durable starter for KC this year."

St. Louis currently has the worst record in the National League at 27-42 but at this point, there's no way to know what it will do ahead of the trade deadline. The National League Central arguably is the worst division in all of baseball right now so St. Louis is just eight and a half games behind the first-place Pittsburgh Pirates. If the Cardinals can make up some ground in the standings, it may make sense for them to add another hurler.

The Cardinals long have been rumored to be interested in adding a pitcher and if they miss out on a top name, Greinke could make sense to add more stability on the back end of the rotation. He's pitched to a 4.65 ERA so far this season in 14 starts but compiled a 3.68 ERA in 2022 so it wouldn't be too surprising to see him lower his ERA slightly. St. Louis' starting rotation has started to take a turn in the right direction, but it wouldn't hurt to add another veteran if they can string together a few wins and start to make up some ground.
