Braves Take Chance On Ex-Cardinals Hurler Looking To Work His Way Back To Big Leagues
One former member of the St. Louis Cardinals is looking to work his way back up to the big leagues with a National League East club.
The Atlanta Braves officially signed former Cardinals hurler Seth Elledge to a minor-league contract, according to the MLB transaction log.
Elledge was drafted in the fourth round of the 2017 MLB June Amateur Draft by the Seattle Mariners. The 27-year-old began his professional career in the Seattle farm system and remained with the organization until joining the Cardinals farm system during the 2018 campaign.
The right-handed hurler began his career in the St. Louis organization with the Double-A Springfield Cardinals. Elledge made 13 appearances out of the bullpen and pitched to a 4.32 ERA and compiled a 3-1 record. In 2019, Elledge was promoted to the Triple-A Memphis Redbirds for the first time and compiled a 4.72 ERA in 21 games. The righty officially made his big league debut with the Cardinals during the 2020 COVID-shortened MLB season and pitched to a 4.63 ERA in 12 games. He made 11 more appearances in 2021 with the Cardinals but has not appeared in a big league season since.
Elledge pitched in the Braves farm system in 2022 but was designated for assignment. In 2023, Elledge spent time in the New York Mets and Detroit Tigers' farm systems but was unable to crack the big league roster. He now will have another chance to work his way back to the big leagues with the NL East-leading Braves.
There's no way to know if he will play much of a role with the club, but hopefully, he's able to impress in the minor leagues and work his way back to the big leagues.
