Cardinals Could Consider Reunion With Slugger Recently Made Available
The St. Louis Cardinals remaining games are nothing more than an audition for the 2024 season with some hope that their young core will use this time to further develop their respective games.
If the Cardinals want to open the auditions to an external search, they could look at a slugger who recently became available and could provide serious pop off of the bench.
First baseman/designated hitter Luke Voit opted out of his contract with the New York Mets on Thursday after showing off his power swing with Triple-A Syracuse.
The 32-year-old hit .264 with 20 extra-base hits including 14 home runs, 35 RBIs and a 1.058 OPS in 37 games for the Syracuse Mets before opting out.
If the veteran cannot find a contender's bench to join, it would make some sense for the Cardinals to find out if this is a hot stretch or a new version of the hulking slugger.
Voit was drafted by the Cardinals in the 22nd round at pick No. 665 of the 2013 Major League Baseball Draft and worked his way through the system to make his debut in 2017.
In the following season, St. Louis shipped off Voit in a notable trade for left-handed reliever Chasen Shreve and right-handed reliever Giovanny Gallegos.
A return to Busch Stadium is far from imminent but could be in the cards.
