Cardinals Could Help Fix Bullpen By Adding Ex-Yankees All-Star In Free Agency
The St. Louis Cardinals have a lot of work to do this offseason in fixing their bullpen.
St. Louis already has improved the roster in a major way this offseason. The Cardinals won just 71 games in 2023 and responded quickly when free agency began by bringing in starters Sonny Gray, Lance Lynn, and Kyle Gibson.
The Cardinals now need to work on improving the bullpen. St. Louis had the 23rd-ranked bullpen ERA last season and needs to add multiple high-leverage hurlers this offseason if it wants to shoot up the rankings.
There still are plenty of hurlers available to help fix the bullpen. There are some top options like Josh Hader or Jordan Hicks, but there also are some less expensive options available who could help.
One option out there is former New York Yankees, Chicago White Sox, Philadelphia Phillies, Tampa Bay Rays, Chicago Cubs, New York Mets, and Miami Marlins hurler David Robertson.
The one-time All-Star had a solid 2023 season with the Mets and Marlins and logged a 3.03 overall ERA across 62 outings. Robertson managed a 78-to-25 strikeout-to-walk ratio and impressed.
He is a 15-year veteran and 38 years old so he likely wouldn't cost much, but he could help. Robertson began the 2023 season with the Mets and had a 2.05 ERA in 40 appearances before being traded to Miami.
St. Louis needs multiple arms in the back of the bullpen. Why not take a chance on the veteran? The Cardinals have money to spend and Robertson could be a worthwhile pickup.
