Cardinals Executive Takes Hard Stance On Manager Oli Marmol's Future With Club
It sounds like there won't be a change coming to the manager position for the St. Louis Cardinals this upcoming offseason.
St. Louis has been a disappointment this season and currently is in last place in the National League Central with an abysmal 65-82 record. The Cardinals were expected to be a World Series contender in 2023 but now the club has to turn its focus to the 2024 campaign. Although there have been some questions, St. Louis reportedly will retain Oli Marmol as the club's manager next season, according to The Athletic's Katie Woo.
"As he perched atop the dugout bench at Busch Stadium on Friday afternoon, St. Louis Cardinals president of baseball operations John Mozeliak addressed what has perhaps the most pressing topic regarding his ballclub in the second half of the season," Woo said. "Manager Oli Marmol will return for 2024, the final year of his three-year contract signed in November 2021.
"I do support (Marmol), Mozeliak said as transcribed by Woo. "I know he'll be back next year."
This isn't the most surprising one in the world. Mozeliak has continued to support and defend Marmol throughout the 2023 campaign despite the down year. The Cardinals likely will be very busy this offseason and the fact that the club remains stable in the manager department should help. St. Louis likely will be overhauling the starting rotation and will be one of the most active teams in baseball. If the Cardinals can't get back on track next year, it wouldn't be too surprising to see Marmol let go then.
