Cardinals Not Closing Door On Addition To Starting Rotation Despite Making Three Moves
The St. Louis Cardinals have been extremely active in free agency this offseason.
St. Louis had a dreadful 2023 campaign and clearly is trying to improve the roster. The Cardinals added Sonny Gray, Lance Lynn, and Kyle Gibson to kick off the offseason. St. Louis followed the moves up by trading away outfielder Tyler O'Neill to the Boston Red Sox and now has acquired Andrew Kittredge from the Tampa Bay Rays to help the bullpen.
There's still plenty of time left in the offseason for the Cardinals to make more moves. Many have wondered if there could be another addition to the starting rotation coming. St. Louis said it wanted to add three hurlers and already has done just that.
Although this is the case, Cardinals president of baseball operations John Mozeliak didn't rule out another option, according to MLB.com's John Denton.
"Asked if his team is still working to improve the starting pitching staff for the season ahead, (John Mozeliak) said, 'We have not been active on the starting pitching front. You never know what could happen. There could be something we weren’t thinking about a week ago that we’re suddenly thinking about tomorrow.'" Denton said.
If the Cardinals were to add to the rotation, it likely would be through a trade at this point in the offseason. St. Louis already has spent big in free agency, and the starters still available may be out of its price range. Blake Snell and Jordan Montgomery are the top two starters still available and will get massive deals.
There still are some intriguing hurlers available who have been mentioned as trade candidates. A few starters who could be traded this offseason are Chicago White Sox ace Dylan Cease, Miami Marlins pitchers Jesús Luzardo and Edward Cabrera, and Milwaukee Brewers star Corbin Burnes.
It's unclear what level of interest St. Louis has in a move, but maybe it will surprise us this offseason.
