Cardinals Not Closing Door On More Additions Despite Busy Offseason Already
Could more moves be on the horizon for the St. Louis Cardinals?
St. Louis has been extremely busy this offseason after a disastrous 2023 season. The Cardinals had high expectations but weren't able to live up to them last season.
The Cardinals clearly knew they needed to improve the roster this offseason and have bolstered both the starting rotation and bullpen. Although this is the case, the Cardinals could still make another addition or two, and adding to the bullpen would be the most likely option.
While it's unclear if more moves could be coming, Cardinals president of baseball operations John Mozeliak didn't rule anything out, according to Fox 2's Joey Schneider.
“We’re going to keep looking and continue to see if there’s a way to improve this club and make some additions," Mozeliak said as transcribed by Schneider. "Overall, we feel good about where we are, but there’s always some work to do.
While this doesn't mean a move is coming, it is interesting that Mozeliak didn't completely rule out another signing. At this point, it would be very unlikely to see St. Louis target another free-agent starting pitcher.
There still are plenty of free-agent relievers available and it wouldn't hurt to add another arm to the back of the Cardinals' bullpen. There are some top options available like Josh Hader or Héctor Neris. Some other intriguing hurlers still available are Aroldis Chapman, Wandy Peralta, and Matt Moore to name a few.
St. Louis likely is done making major splashes, but it wouldn't hurt to add another high-leverage reliever.
