Cardinals Reportedly Attempting To Land Star Pitcher In Possible Blockbuster Trade
Are the St. Louis Cardinals done adding this offseason?
That's certainly a possibility. St. Louis already has added three starting pitchers this offseason in Sonny Gray, Kyle Gibson, and Lance Lynn, and already has greatly improved the club. At this point, they may be done adding pitching but there's always a chance a move could come to fruition.
St. Louis won't be adding in free agency, but a trade could always be possible. The Cardinals have a surplus of young, outfield talent, and trades could be on the horizon. St. Louis reportedly is interested in landing Chicago White Sox star pitcher Dylan Cease, according to USA Today Sports' Bob Nightengale.
"Cease, who finished second in the AL Cy Young race two years ago, still has two years of control before he’s a free agent and earned just $5.7 million last season," Nightengale said. "He’s scheduled to earn $8.8 million in salary arbitration this year, according to MLB Trade Rumors. There’s a reason why the (Los Angeles Dodgers), (Atlanta Braves), St. Louis, and (Baltimore Orioles) are all clamoring for him. The White Sox are telling teams they are in no rush to move him until the free-agent picture comes into focus.
Cease is going to have a massive market this offseason. He is just 27 years old and has been dependable with Chicago. He had a down year with the White Sox in 2023 with a 4.58 ERA but still made a league-high 33 starts. In 2022 he compiled a 2.20 ERA in 32 starts and finished second in the American League Cy Young Award voting. He has a career 3.83 ERA in five seasons and would be a major pickup for St. Louis if it could complete a deal.
