The St. Louis Cardinals could make a major splash in free agency this upcoming offseason.

St. Louis is going to have plenty of work to do with its starting rotation this offseason. The Cardinals will have at least three rotation spots to fill and luckily there will be plenty of starters available in free agency. The starting pitching free agent market is extremely deep and one player the Cardinals reportedly could be a favorite to land is San Diego Padres hurler Blake Snell, according to MLB.com's Mark Feinsand.

"On May 19, Snell was 1-6 with a 5.40 ERA after nine starts, leading many to project that the 30-year-old was costing himself a ton of money in free agency," Feinsand said. "Since then, all he’s been is the best pitcher in baseball, going 9-3 with a 1.48 ERA over his past 17 starts. Snell, the 2018 AL Cy Young Award winner, might add a second Cy Young to his résumé this season, which would make the left-hander only the seventh pitcher to earn that honor in both leagues.

He’s primed to cash in as the best starting pitcher (Non-Ohtani Division) on this year’s free-agent market. Potential fits: Cardinals, Dodgers, Padres."

Snell has been one of the best pitchers in all of baseball so far this season. The 30-year-old is leading the league with a minuscule 2.60 ERA in 27 starts and 149 innings pitched. The lefty took home the 2018 American League Cy Young Award and very well could win the National League Cy Young Award this season.

He's set to be the best free agent pitcher available -- not including Los Angeles Angels star Shohei Ohtani -- and could make perfect sense for the Cardinals. St. Louis needs to rebuild the starting rotation and Snell could be the perfect person to start with.
