Cardinals Reportedly Considering Reunion With Breakout Star In Free Agency
A reunion could be on the horizon for the St. Louis Cardinals in free agency.
St. Louis will enter the offseason with expectations that the club will completely overhaul its starting rotation. The Cardinals already have stated that they are looking for at least three starters and luckily for them, there will be plenty available this offseason. One player who reportedly is on their radar is former Cardinals lefty Jordan Montgomery, according to the St. Louis Post-Dispatch's Derrick Goold.
"The Cardinals will, of course, multitask and explore other possibilities in the marketplace, including but not limited to lefty Blake Snell, a favorite for the (National League) Cy Young," Goold said. "There are also multiple pitchers from Japan, such as Orix’s Yoshinobu Yamamoto, who the Cardinals have scouted, and lefty closer Yuki Matsui.
"Mozeliak said he did not want to “close the door” for a reunion with lefty Jordan Montgomery, a former Cardinal and future free agent who pitched seven scoreless innings as (the Texas Rangers') Game 1 winner this past week."
St. Louis acquired Montgomery from the New York Yankees in 2022 for outfielder Harrison Bader but traded him away this season to the Texas Rangers ahead of the 2023 Major League Baseball Trade Deadline. Montgomery was fantastic this season compiling a 3.20 ERA in 32 overall starts, but St. Louis' struggles led it to be sellers at the deadline.
Montgomery will be a free agent and likely will have a big market after his successful season. The big lefty dazzled for the Rangers in his 2023 postseason debut logging seven innings of work while striking out five batters and not allowing a run. Montgomery would be a familiar option for the Cardinals while providing some stability back to the rotation.
St. Louis will be adding multiple arms this offseason and bringing back Montgomery would be a great start.
