Cardinals Reportedly Have Chance To Land Top Free Agent Starting Pitcher This Offseason
The St. Louis Cardinals already have started to improve the starting rotation but they still have plenty of work to do.
St. Louis has been one of the most active teams in baseball in the starting pitching free-agent market and already has signed two starters in Lance Lynn and Kyle Gibson. While this is a solid start to raise the floor of the club, if the 2024 season were to kick off tomorrow St. Louis likely would miss the playoffs again.
The Cardinals need to add one or two more top-of-the-rotation arms but the question of how much the club is willing to spend has been floated on numerous occasions. Many have speculated that the Cardinals aren't willing to spend big but that reportedly isn't the case, according to The Athletic's Jim Bowden.
"I think there is a chance they could outbid the competition for a top free-agent starter," Bowden said. I also think they have enough depth on their roster and in their farm system to trade for a strong starter. The Cardinals have signed Lance Lynn and Kyle Gibson but now need to address the top of their rotation. They'll be an intriguing team to watch during the Winter Meetings in Nashville."
This latest speculation from Bowden should be music to Cardinals fan's ears. If an insider like Bowden is expecting the Cardinals to spend big and maybe even outbid some of the other high-spenders this offseason, maybe St. Louis could end up landing a game-changer this offseason for the rotation.
