Cardinals Reportedly Interested In Trading For Young Mariners Star Pitcher
With the trade deadline less than two weeks away, the St. Louis Cardinals desperately need pitching help, though any move made would be with next year in mind.
St. Louis is on pace to have one of their worst seasons ever as they sit at a disappointing 43-53 record -- largely due to atrocious pitching performances.
It's improbable this late in the season that a major turnaround will happen, but, hopefully, a trade for pitching will make an impact for years to come.
"Seattle's Logan Gilbert is of interest to the Cardinals, according to a source, though it's unclear what the Mariners would command in exchange," St. Louis Post-Dispatch's Derrick Gould wrote Friday.
In just his second season, Gilbert is putting up impressive numbers with a 3.65 ERA, 111-20 strikeout-to-walk ratio, .222 batting average against and 1.01 WHIP in 113 innings across 19 starts.
The 26-year-old ranks No. 26 in the league for strikeouts while maintaining an elite walk rate, missing bats and eating innings -- what more could you ask for? He could seriously bolster the rotation and would be under team control through the 2027 season.
"We're going to trade people. I just don't know if it's going to be household names or more of the guys who aren't likely to be here next year." St. Louis' president of baseball operations John Mozeliak told the media.
Due to Gilbert's high market value, St. Louis will likely have to say goodbye to household names such as Brandon Donovan or Tommy Edman along with prospects to acquire the young stud.
With rumors pointing to St. Louis wanting to keep Nootbar and Walker, there are only so many position players to make a move of this caliber.
