Cardinals Reportedly May Trade Young Outfielder; Deal With Yankees Makes Sense
The St. Louis Cardinals have some work to do.
St. Louis is 3-7 over its last 10 games and is 10-17 through 27 games so far this season. The Cardinals sit at the bottom of the National League Central standings and are in real danger of digging themselves too big of a hole to come out of it if they are unable to get back on the right track in the near future.
The Cardinals' starting pitching has been the club's Achilles heel to begin the season without a doubt. St. Louis currently has three starting pitchers with an ERA over 5.00 in Miles Mikolas, Steven Matz, and Jake Woodford. Rumors have swirled about the club potentially acquiring another hurler and a move certainly would make sense. If St. Louis opted to make a trade, one of the club's most likely trade pieces would be outfielder Tyler O'Neill and the club reportedly has considering moving him according to ESPN's Jeff Passan.
“They have five very capable, everyday big league outfielders,” Passan said. "I mean, (a trade) certainly is a possibility now that Lars Nootbaar is back. Jordan Walker is not going anywhere, so he’s the guy who’s sticking around. But in addition to Jordan Walker, they’ve got Tyler O’Neill, Alec Burleson, Lars Nootbaar, Dylan Carlson, and Juan Yepez.”
O'Neill has been in trade rumors all season since having a run-in with manager Oli Marmol and its sounds like they aren't slowing down. One team that desperately could use an outfielder certainly is the New York Yankees. The club's depth has been tested early and slugger Aaron Judge is dealing with a hip injury, Giancarlo Stanton is dealing with an injury of his own, Harrison Bader currently is on the injured list and Franchy Cordero was sent down to the minors because of subpar play.
New York currently has Aaron Hicks, Oswaldo Perez, and Willie Calhoun all healthy but the club certainly could use a lift. A move for an outfielder would make sense even if the Yankees weren't dealing with all of the injuries they currently are because they didn't have much depth, to begin with.
The Yankees have injuries on their starting pitching staff as well, but one player who could be an intriguing option for the Cardinals is Luis Severino. The two-time All-Star is injured himself but should be back in either May or June. Severino has dealt with a wide range of injuries throughout his career but when he is healthy he can be dominant. If the Cardinals were to make a move it likely wouldn't be until closer to the trade deadline which would give Severino plenty of time to return to the hill beforehand.
New York could use an outfielder and the Cardinals could use a pitcher. The Yankees have been solid without Severino and he's set to be a free agent at the end of the season so maybe a deal could be found.
