Cardinals Reportedly Met With Representatives For Fireballer Recently
The St. Louis Cardinals need to add to the bullpen this offseason and could look into a reunion.
St. Louis already has improved the starting rotation this offseason and the bullpen is the club's next priority. Luckily for the club, the bullpen free-agent market has been extremely slow so far.
There are some very intriguing players still available and one player the Cardinals reportedly have shown interest in is fireballer Jordan Hicks, according to The Athletic's Katie Woo.
"The Cardinals were one of many teams to meet with representatives for Jordan Hicks during the Winter Meeting last week, per multiple league sources," Woo said. "The team came close to inking an extension with Hicks before the deadline, but when negotiations fell through, St. Louis traded the right-handed -- who had recently emerged as a legitimate closer -- the (Toronto Blue Jays).
"The Trade didn't close the door on Hicks, who would open to returning to the Cardinals. However, given his high ceiling and prime age (at 27 years old, Hicks is the youngest free-agent reliever available) league interest is sure to be high. Besides the Cardinals, the (New York Yankees), and (Houston Astros) have also reportedly checked in on Hicks, a Houston native."
Hicks was selected in the third round of the 2015 Major League Baseball June Amateur Draft and eventually made his big league debut in 2018. The fireballer spent the first four-plus years of his career with St. Louis before being traded to the Blue Jays ahead of the trade deadline this past season.
The 27-year-old has a career 3.85 ERA across 212 total appearances with the Cardinals and Blue Jays.
