Cardinals Reportedly Will Pursue Star Duo This Upcoming Offseason To Bolster Rotation
The St. Louis Cardinals need to make significant additions to their starting rotation this offseason if they want to make their way back to the postseason in 2024.
Luckily for the Cardinals, this upcoming offseason will have an extremely deep pitching market. St. Louis already has stated that the club will be looking to add at least three starters this offseason and two the club reportedly will be pursuing are Minnesota Twins star Sonny Gray and Philadelphia Phillies ace Aaron Nola, according to the St. Louis Post-Dispatch's Derrick Goold.
"The list of free-agent pitchers the Cardinals intend to pursue includes Phillies ace Aaron Nola and Twins veteran Sonny Gray, according to multiple sources," Goold said. "The list of their interests is much longer. The Cardinals have advertised adding at least three pitchers from the outside. Trades and foreign markets are other sources they’ve already started vetting."
This isn't the first time either Gray or Nola have been linked to the Cardinals and it certainly won't be the last, either. St. Louis has money to spend and needs to make a big move or two. Gray had a phenomenal year for the Twins pitching to a 2.79 ERA. Nola had a down year for Philadelphia but has been one of the most consistent right-handed starters since debuting with the club in 2015.
St. Louis has its work cut out for it and both Gray and Nola certainly could help. If the Cardinals could land one of them, it would be nice. Adding both Gray and Nola plus one more depth piece could be exactly what the club needs to get back to the playoffs next year.
